The University of León, through the European Centre for Digital Innovation DIGIS3, of which it is a part, continues to advance its goal of driving the digitalisation of businesses and public organisations across the province of León.
This goal has now been extended to the Cármenes Town Council, where the Mayor, Dionisio García, and Ignacio Prieto, Director of ULE’s Cartography Service, have established the groundwork for launching a digitalisation enhancement programme, set to be rolled out over the course of the coming year.
The project aims to establish a model for the digitalisation of spatial information used by small town councils in their management and planning tasks. Specifically, the model includes various types of information, such as urban planning, zoning of protected natural areas, boundaries of Public Utility Forests, grazing lands, or local entities with jurisdiction smaller than the municipal level, among others.
As explained by Prieto, the project will be carried out in three phases: converting spatial information into a digital format usable by a Geographic Information System (GIS); enabling the use and updating of the information in a low-cost IT system; and conducting a training course for Town Council staff on the use and updating of the information.
Through this project, DIGIS3 aims to improve the digital capabilities of public bodies. To this end, the Cartography Service has designed a management model, in which the Cármenes municipality will now participate. This model is already being implemented in the municipality of San Emiliano in León and will soon be scaled up for development in an entity related to environmental and cultural protection and economic development.
This project lays the foundations for the digitalisation of the municipality of Cármenes, which, due to its budgetary limitations and the lack of technical staff specialised in handling geospatial information, is an ideal candidate for digital maturity improvement with the support of DIGIS3, through a project funded by the European Union and the University of León.
